Online Learning Pros - Allows for learning in in distant or disadvantaged locations
Online education is easy to access and provides a convenient way to obtain course materials such as homework, exam schedules, test scores and more. Most online learning environments are accessible from a standard internet connection and typically require average home computer system requirements. - Facilitates easy information transfer
For most online schools, all course information is obtained by browsing the internet and sending/receiving email. This instant and secure transfer of information provides a convenient way for students to communicate with their instructors and fellow classmates. Some classes participate in chat sessions on a weekly or even more frequent basis. This provides a means for students to interact with each other while learning a particular subject thus enhancing the overall learning experience. Also visit Online Degrees for further detail regarding distance learning and training. Cons - Changing technology may create barriers to accessing learning environments
As with new teaching methods, online learning has faced much criticism from many sources as they claim it has devalued post secondary education and will reduce the effectiveness of obtaining quality career positions by obtaining higher education. These skeptics claim many existing barriers to effectively learning complex subjects in an online-only setting. They also feel that it isolates the students from one another as well as their instructor reducing the overall value of taking the course. - Limited understanding of effective teaching methods due to youth of online learning
Due to the youth of online learning, there has been little research conducted to evaluate the teaching methods or the effectiveness of student comprehension through an online-only learning environment. Some programs also offer a combination of online and classroom style teaching for the same course. This allows for the benefits of both types of learning to be realized. Classroom Learning Pros - Provides interactive classroom setting that promotes the open exchange of ideas.
Having numerous students learning in the same classroom has the added benefit of allowing students to exchange ideas and questions with one another providing another valuable learning medium that online envrionements cannot replicate. First-hand interaction with the educating professor also allows for ideas to be exchanged freely and without any communication barriers. Cons - Encourage passive learning
Depending on the level of interaction in the classroom setting, shy students may be allowed to attend classes without providing alternative ways to communicate ideas. Forcing students to learn by vocal exchange with a professor may limit their ability to learn.
- Ignore individual learning differences between students
Classrooms environments tend to group students together in large number often making it difficult for instructors to isolate learning deficiencies and provide the necessary close attention that individuals may need to learn. Online classes allow for a more individual persepective from the professors standpoint due to most of the communication being easily handled through email and chat. - Neglect problem solving, critical thinking, and higher order learning skills
The classroom setting can also hinder ones ability to learn by allowing other, more vocal, students to dominate the bulk of the discussion environments. Quieter personalities are limited in their communication options for exchanging ideas and information. Summary
The truth to the matter is that there are advantages and disadvantages to every type of learning environment. It is best to use the advantages that each method offers to their fullest extent. It appears from the initial studies, that a combination of online and classroom learning to convey subject matter to students will be the best teaching method. However, in some instances the inconvenience of maintaining a consistent school schedule prohibits potential students from furthering their education. Learning also highly depends on the individual's motivation to learn. So it still comes down to the effort that the students put into their education that ultimately determines how much they will retain and how beneficial the overall experience was to their future career.

After taking several online classes I have my own pros and cons I’d add to these lists…
ReplyDeletePros
Whether I have didn’t have transportation, had a surgery or a time consuming classroom setting just didn’t work with an online class my opportunity for education always remained open. If I would have had interruptions and taken breaks from college, I might never be finish. With online classes and my laptop I can due my work anywhere where I am on vacation, in the hospital or at my dad’s for the weekend.
I was afraid that online classes would be boring, though it would be a boring, e-mail based class, but with the variety of assignments, exams, papers, discussions, chat, online interactive lessons, not ot mention in this class, virtual experiences, presentations, book reports, debates, art projects… the ways of learning are limitless.
Con
With computer problems or internet complications, it makes the coarse extremely hard to complete. I have had tons with this class and nearly given up, the timing can be terrible for technological problems!
It is easy in classes where you are responsible to read from textbooks, and say you have an exam at the end of every chapter, to procrastinate and wait until last minute and while taking the exam be rustling though your notes. This though is not the fault of online learning it is of course the indiscipline student that some of us are occasionally.
Online learning has been both a blessing for me and a curse. It has been extremely flexible and helpful for me to complete credits while not having to attend classes giving me the ability to work full time, and take on a good class load. Unfortunately I'm also the procrastinating type. I don't get the drive to finish something until the last minute. This makes some online classes more challenging than others for me. Also certain subject taught online don't work out as well as others for me. This is especially true for math. When I'm taught math I like to watch as the teacher shows us how to do it, and work along with them. An online math class doesn't exactly give me the tools I need to be successful in such a subject.
ReplyDeleteOf course this class is online so I've taken an online class. This isn't my first class however. I feel that online learning is very convenient. Trying to find time to fit in an hour or two hour long class in my schedule seems nearly impossible these days.
ReplyDeleteBy having online classes I can do work at my own pace and whenever I have time. All the assignments are given to you in advance so if you want to work ahead because you will be away you have that luxury. Also you may be a faster learner while teaching yourself without having people interupt and ask questions while in a normal classroom. The only thing I feel is wrong with online learning is the interaction be kids and students within the class. It is very limited and there isn't any one-on-one action. Otherwise it's great.
Online education isnt better or worse than the regular classroom education. It works for some people and not for others. Almost in the same way that some are visual learners and others are not. If someone is only able to work on their time and their hours and they can get the work done by themselves than online classes are probably better for them. Others would never do the work if they didnt go to class and had to rely on themselves to remember to do the work and keep up with the class. This is why people have the choice of which one they would like. Online classes have provided an opportunity for those who never had the time to finish college to do just that.
ReplyDeleteThe technology for online classroom instruction is here in full force. Many schools from kindergarten to college are embracing this new development in delivering education to the public. Pennsylvania has a virtual charter school website for grades K-12. The benefits to society from online instruction are easy to appreciate. A student can access online courses at any time of day or night at their own convenience. Much time and gasoline are saved by eliminating the need to travel to a central classroom location for lectures. Online education has all the components of traditional education including tutors, blackboard instruction and access to textbooks. Art, science, math and language can all be successfully taught online as in the traditional classroom. Technology and innovation will continue to improve the online classroom experience in the future. What are the disadvantages to society with online classrooms? The most glaring disadvantage to online instruction is the lack of social interaction in face to face interaction with one’s peers. Social chatrooms and virtual classrooms pale in comparison to sitting next to a student and engaging in real live conversation. Oh, and one more major disadvantage of online learning would be the loss of the highly prized tradition of “snow days”.
ReplyDeleteOnline education has been very helpful to me especially when I am not around. Although, today many people still prefer classroom learning over online because it affects your grade. I personally, think that online is better as long as you are dedicated to do the work and if you have the motivation to learn. Online learning is always flexible for you. It always works with you, you can access it anytime during the day.
ReplyDeleteI find online education very easy at times but I think it depends on the class. I have taken many online class and I enjoying doing them. Its nice to know that you can do them at your own paste and time. Although sometimes I miss the classroom interaction.
ReplyDeleteOnline classroom is definitely one of the biggest future debates in education! Some researches feel online and virtual classrooms will take over the traditional form of a classroom. As everyone has stated, there are so many pros and cons to this. If this continues to be evolving, science will have to keep up with the rapid changes that will be needed for education. Technology would need to be priced at a level where all could afford the technology needed. As of today, my 5-year-old laptop in computer years is like 20 years old! It is expensive to keep your computer up-to-date! The art of on-line classes just as in this class allows the student to view so many other realms of technology on line. If it was not for this class, I am sure I would have never experience most of the web sites and technology as I did. I feel society does depend on on-line classes due to schedules which allows a parent, full time employee or whatever other reason to receive an education. It is society friendly! One of the issues that do come with it is that it lacks face-to-face contact, which is hard for some in the learning process. As well as teachers explain and are accessible to the students, text can be interpreted very differently as in person. Many learn best from life experiences that are taught in the classroom, but how society evolves, this form of technology will continue to advance well beyond the future!
